APS uses the NSC/IEB 1-7 achievement-level scale applied to a candidate's six recognised 20-credit subjects. Life Orientation is a 10-credit subject and is EXCLUDED from the APS. Maximum APS = 42. No bonus points are added for English or Mathematics, and the same APS definition applies across all nine faculties. Selection (as opposed to minimum admission) in Health Sciences and Veterinary Science instead ranks candidates on a separate Merit Point Score (MPS), and the 5-year BEng and the 4/5-year BSc streams in EBIT/NAS are stated in raw percentages rather than levels.
APS 35 for all nine 4-year BEng disciplines; the 5-year BEng (ex-ENGAGE) needs APS 33 with 65% English, Maths and Physical Sciences.

IEB, Cambridge and IB applicants
IEB
Identical to the NSC. The 2027 prospectus is "Applicants with an NSC/IEB Certificate"; the APS "is done by using the NSC 1 to 7 scale of achievement... based on a candidate's achievement in six recognised 20-credit subjects", maximum 42, Life Orientation excluded, for DBE and IEB alike.
Advanced Programme / Further Studies: No APS credit: the APS counts only the six recognised 20-credit subjects, so AP subjects sit outside it and UP adds no bonus points. The only published recognition is the FLY@UP Assist Award B first-year award - R2 000 each for 80-100% in Advanced/Further/Alpha/Additional Maths and Advanced/Further Phys Sci, paid only to students who also qualify for Award A (an average of 80%+ over the best six subjects, excluding Life Orientation).
No APS is used for non-Umalusi applicants, except in Veterinary Science: the BVSc needs an APS of at least 35 and the BVetNurs at least 28, worked out with the conversion table in the faculty brochure (Annexure A). Each symbol is converted with the "UP percentage conversion table" into a "percentage awarded by UP (equivalent to the NSC achievement level)", and the faculty tables list the required level for each compulsory subject. Only an official Cambridge Statement of Results is accepted; no predicted results.

Exemption: A USAf Certificate of Complete Exemption or a Foreign Conditional Exemption; "No other exemption types are accepted" and UP does not consider a Senate Discretionary Exemption. The LLB requires a Certificate of Complete Exemption. UP does not apply for the exemption on the applicant's behalf.
The IGCSE/GCSE/O Level table is for CONDITIONAL admission only: "If final AS and/or A levels have been completed, this table will not apply... can also not be used for final admission and/or registration." In Law and Health Sciences English must be at A and/or AS Level for final admission.
No APS, except in Veterinary Science (BVSc APS 35, BVetNurs APS 28, using the faculty brochure's conversion table). IB HL and SL grades are converted with the "UP percentage conversion table" into a UP percentage equivalent to an NSC achievement level, and each faculty table gives the required level per subject in separate IB SL and IB HL columns. Unlike GCSE/IGCSE, the IB columns are valid for final admission, not only conditional admission.
Subject minimums: LLB English = SL 5 / HL 4 (level 6). BEng: English SL 4 / HL 3; Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry SL 5 / HL 4. MBChB and BChD: English SL 4 / HL 3, Mathematics SL 5 / HL 4, Physics and Chemistry SL 4 / HL 3. Most BCom degrees: English SL 4 / HL 3. BEd (all phases): English SL 2 / HL 2.
Exemption: The same USAf requirement as for Cambridge: a Certificate of Complete Exemption or a Foreign Conditional Exemption, with a Complete Exemption compulsory for the LLB. UP publishes no minimum IB Diploma total-points score.
UP does not consider NBT results at all. The SAT is compulsory only for High School Diploma (USA/Canada) or equivalent qualifications, not for IB or Cambridge applicants. Non-SA applicants from countries with medical schools are not considered for MBChB, except where intergovernmental agreements are in place.
