Bachelor of Radiography (Diagnostics)

University of Pretoria · 2027 intake NSC/IEB check in My Map

First-year tuition (2026): R82 000 to R92 000

Requirements

UP 2027 example: English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at level 4; APS 30. Selection applies; only first-choice applicants are considered.

Selection applies; 60 first-year places, and only applicants who list this programme as their first choice are considered. Conditional selection uses final Grade 11 results; the merit-point score must not drop by more than five points in the final Grade 12 examinations. Applications for 2027 closed on 30 June 2026.

BHSc Diagnostic Sonography

Durban University of Technology · confirm current intake

Requirements

Ultrasound imaging; DUT lists a four-year full-time qualification. This is a separate qualification from diagnostic radiography. DUT 2027: NSC with 28 points or more; English, Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences at level 4, plus one other 20-credit subject at level 4. Mathematical Literacy and Technical Mathematics are not accepted in place of Mathematics, and Technical Science is not accepted in place of Physical Sciences. DUT's basic training requirements: minimum age 18 years as at end of December 2026, and students must be physically fit; an applicant with severe disability and/or blood-related illness may not be accepted, and all students have compulsory medicals in their first week. The CAO gives first preference to applicants who never studied previously at any other university. CAO 2027 (DU-D-RAS): applicants are only considered if they place this programme as choice 1; entrance test, clinical-centre visits (at least 8 hours in the department) and interviews may be required. The CAO lists 31 August 2026 as the closing date for DUT's radiography degrees, so 2027 applications have closed.

BHSc Nuclear Medicine

Durban University of Technology · confirm current intake

Requirements

Imaging and treatment using radioactive materials, with clinical training. This is a separate qualification from diagnostic radiography. Neither DUT's 2027 Study Opportunities prospectus nor the CAO Handbook for 2027 entry lists this degree (DUT's radiography department lists three degrees for 2027: Diagnostic Radiography, Diagnostic Sonography and Radiotherapy and Oncology), so a 2027 intake appears unlikely. Confirm with DUT before planning around it.

BHSc Radiotherapy

Durban University of Technology · confirm current intake

Requirements

Planning and delivering radiation treatment, including cancer care. DUT's basic training requirements: minimum age 18 years as at end of December 2026 (the CAO says applicants must be 18 or older in 2027), and students must be physically fit; an applicant with severe disability and/or blood-related illness may not be accepted, and all students have compulsory medicals in their first week. The CAO gives first preference to applicants who never studied previously at any other university. CAO 2027 (DU-D-RTO): applicants are only considered if they place this programme as choice 1; minimum 28 points excluding Life Orientation, entrance tests, a portfolio and an interview for shortlisted applicants; applications received until 31 August 2026 are considered, so 2027 applications have closed.

BHSc Diagnostic Radiography

Durban University of Technology · confirm current intake

Requirements

X-ray imaging; the diagnostic radiography degree is the first of the three degrees DUT's Department of Radiography lists. CAO 2027 (DU-D-RAD, 4 years): applicants are considered if they place this programme as choice 1, 2 or 3; first preference goes to applicants who never studied previously at any other university; minimum 28 points excluding Life Orientation, ranking, entrance tests, a portfolio and an interview for shortlisted applicants; applications received until 31 August 2026 are considered, so 2027 applications have closed.

Bachelor of Diagnostic Radiography

University of Johannesburg · 2027 intake NSC/IEB check in My Map

First-year tuition (2026): R44 100 to R60 960

Requirements

UJ 2027 example: English level 5, Mathematics level 4, Physical Sciences level 4, Life Sciences level 5; APS 31 with Mathematics. Technical Mathematics and Technical Sciences are not accepted.

Published minimums only. Selection, bachelor admission, any extra requirements and available places still apply. UJ ranks all applicants from highest to lowest APS when it makes final selections in January, and says that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a place.

Your qualification route
  1. Choose the radiography discipline you want to train in; diagnostic imaging is one route.
  2. Complete the accredited degree and supervised clinical training.
  3. Complete applicable HPCSA registration and community service; check separate training for specialised modalities.

A radiographer is not a radiologist. Radiologists are medical specialists. Radiation therapy, nuclear medicine and ultrasound routes must be checked separately.
