Teacher guides
One lesson per grade, using the same My Matric Map families use at home.
- Grade 9: Subject choicesA subject plan to discuss with a parent, guardian or teacher.
- Grade 10: Exploring directionsA study shortlist and subject targets to revisit as the learner progresses.
- Grade 11: Study preparationA programme shortlist and subject targets to revisit after the next report.
- Grade 12: ApplicationsAn application plan with programme choices, funding routes and next actions.
- After matric: Next stepsA fresh application shortlist, funding routes and alternatives to investigate.
Grade 9: Subject choices
By the end: A subject plan to discuss with a parent, guardian or teacher.
Before
Share the subjects and combinations your school offers, along with your subject-choice deadline.
In the lesson
- Open My Matric Map and choose Grade 9. Explore a few degree fields that interest the learner.
- In Your subjects, try a Mathematics and science combination. Add languages and other subjects to the notes.
- Read the subject check together. It checks common requirements, not admission eligibility.
- Print or save the subject plan and discuss any questions before submitting the school’s own subject-choice form.
Afterwards
Check the full combination and curriculum with the school. For international curricula, confirm equivalent subjects rather than assuming the South African subject check applies directly.
Grade 10: Exploring directions
By the end: A study shortlist and subject targets to revisit as the learner progresses.
Before
Ask learners to bring their latest report. Grade 10 results are a planning baseline, not a prediction of admission.
In the lesson
- Open My Matric Map and choose Grade 10. Pick up to five degree fields to explore, using Browse by interest if the learner is unsure.
- Choose the curriculum and tap the symbol for each subject from the latest report.
- Look at where each programme stands: minimums met, within reach or not yet. Note which subject gaps matter most.
- Agree one subject to focus on this term, and revisit the plan after the next report.
Afterwards
Requirements can change before the learner applies. Use the plan to set direction and targets, and check the correct intake when the learner reaches Grade 12.
Grade 11: Study preparation
By the end: A programme shortlist and subject targets to revisit after the next report.
Before
Ask families to have the learner’s latest report available. Every prefilled result must be checked.
In the lesson
- Open My Matric Map and choose Grade 11. Select degree fields to explore.
- Choose the curriculum and tap the symbol for each subject from the learner’s actual report.
- Compare programme requirements and build a shortlist. Discuss gaps with subject teachers.
- Use the preparation plan to investigate costs, funding and extra selection requirements. Revisit it after the next report.
Afterwards
Published requirements are a planning reference. Check the correct intake when the learner is ready to apply; meeting minimums does not guarantee admission.
Grade 12: Applications
By the end: An application plan with programme choices, funding routes and next actions.
Before
Have the learner’s latest report and official university application pages available.
In the lesson
- Open My Matric Map and choose Grade 12. Check results and build a balanced shortlist.
- Confirm each programme’s deadline and extra requirements on its official page.
- Open My shortlist on My dashboard to record progress. Apply through the institution’s own portal.
- Check documents, funding and accommodation separately. Keep submission receipts and follow up on outstanding items.
Afterwards
My shortlist records the learner’s own progress. It does not submit or verify an application. Families choose whether to share their plan with the school.
After matric: Next steps
By the end: A fresh application shortlist, funding routes and alternatives to investigate.
Before
Have the final matric results and an ID document available, and check which institutions are still accepting applications.
In the lesson
- Open My Matric Map and choose Finished matric. Choose degree fields, including a backup.
- Enter the final results by tapping the symbol for each subject.
- Build a shortlist that mixes safe, realistic and reach options, and confirm that each programme is still open for applications.
- Check funding and residence separately. Where results fall short, investigate rewriting subjects, extended programmes or related qualifications.
Afterwards
Late and mid-year intakes vary by institution. Confirm dates and requirements on each official page before applying.
