UNISA: NSC with degree endorsement and APS 20, with at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning; plus Music passed as a school subject, or Theory of Music (UNISA Grade 5, ABRSM or Trinity Grade 6 theory, or UNISA's Music Foundations short learning programme). Distance learning, NQF level 7, 360 credits.
The UNISA page lists no audition. Applicants without the music requirement are referred to the BA with Musicology as a major or the Music Foundations short learning programme. The page does not state an intake year.
Your qualification route
Build your practical and theory standard at school: several universities ask for about Grade 6–7 practical and Grade 5 theory (UNISA, ABRSM or Trinity) or school Music, and most of them audition applicants (UNISA's distance BMus page lists no audition).
Apply before the music programme's closing date, which differs by university, and prepare the audition pieces and the theory test.
After the degree, add a PGCE to teach music in schools, or continue to postgraduate study for research, composition or music therapy.
Meeting the admission score is not enough: the audition decides most music admissions. A BMus usually takes four years with more practical and specialist study; BA (Music) degrees usually take three years, and UKZN's lets you carry a second, non-music major. Genres differ by university: Wits, for example, considers classical, jazz and African music only. Music therapy needs postgraduate training: UP's 2027 MMus (Music Therapy) asks for an honours or four-year degree with Psychology at final-year level, and the HPCSA registers arts therapists (music).
