Scores use Stellenbosch’s own scale. A minimum is not a guaranteed place.
No APS or points table. Admission is on the NSC average percentage: the highest mark in a Language of Learning and Teaching (English or Afrikaans) plus the five best other 20-credit subjects, divided by 6 (Life Orientation, Advanced Mathematics and Mathematics Paper 3 excluded), plus programme subject minimums. Faculties then rank on their own selection score: Engineering = Maths% + Physical Sciences% + 6 x NSC average (max 800); Science = [(2 x Maths) + 5 other subjects] / 7; Law = NSC aggregate and NBT in an 80:20 ratio; EMS, AgriSciences, Arts, Education and Medicine and Health Sciences rank on the NSC average itself. Grade 11 marks give conditional offers, Grade 12 results final offers.

The audition and theoretical test are part of selection: candidates must be available for them at the Department of Music in Stellenbosch, and SU sends the audition information once it has your application. The Faculty lists 80 students for all programmes in the Department of Music together (BMus, BA (Music), diplomas and the higher certificate). SU also offers a BA in Music (3 years) with the same requirements. SU's 2027 faculty admissions document gives a closing date of 31 July.
IEB, Cambridge and IB applicants
IEB
Identical to the state NSC: the basic requirement is 'A National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Independent Examinations Board (IEB) school-leaving certificate as certified by Umalusi', and the 2027 conversion table's NSC column is headed 'SA NSC/IEB'. Only Law requires the NBT of IEB NSC applicants.
Advanced Programme / Further Studies: Excluded from the average. SU calculates the average as the highest Language of Learning and Teaching mark + 5 best 20-credit subjects 'excluding Life Orientation, Advanced Mathematics, Mathematics 3 and any other non NSC subjects', divided by 6.

Cambridge (A Level, AS Level, IGCSE)
Each grade converts to a percentage 'awarded by Stellenbosch University' via the table in s6 of the International Curriculum booklet. Those percentages then feed the normal SU average (best Language of Learning and Teaching mark + 5 best 20-credit subjects, LO excluded, /6) and faculty selection scores. The booklet gives its own minimum average per programme, e.g. 60% BScAgric, 65% BSc (both the NSC minimums), 85% BCom Actuarial Science (the NSC minimum for Actuarial Science is 80%; 85% is its 2027 selection level).
A Level: A* = 95% · A = 90% · B = 85% · C = 80% · D = 70% · E = 60%
AS Level: A = 90% · B = 75% · C = 65% · D = 55%
IGCSE / O Level: A* = 90% · A = 85% · B = 75% · C = 65% · D = 55% · E = 30%
Subject minimums: Published per programme as grades, not as a formula. BCom (Actuarial Science), NSC Maths 80%: Maths A on AS Level or C on A Level; English First Language C on AS/GCSE or E on A Level. BSc (Biodiversity and Ecology), NSC Maths 60%: Maths C on AS Level or E on A Level.
Exemption: USAf matriculation exemption required. A Level route: 2 A Levels (A-E) plus 3 GCSE/O Levels (A-C), English First Language. AS route: 4 AS Levels (A-D) plus 1 GCSE/O Level (A-C), English First Language. Applicants with only IGCSE subjects are not considered for any degree programme.
The same table also covers Pearson Edexcel A/AS Levels, HIGCSE/NSSC HL (1=90, 2=75, 3=60, 4=45) and the German Abitur. IGCSE F/G map only to NSC level 1 (0-29%) with no SU percentage; no AS Level E row is published. The 2027 booklet is published on the SU International pages; the admission page's 'International qualifications' tab still links the 2026 booklet (2025-09), which gives the same conversion values.

IB Diploma
The s6 conversion table turns each HL and SL grade into an SU percentage, which then feeds the normal SU average (best Language of Learning and Teaching mark + 5 best 20-credit subjects, Life Orientation excluded, divided by 6) and the faculty selection scores. The booklet gives its own minimum average per programme (e.g. 60% AgriSciences and 65% BSc, both the NSC minimums; 85% BCom Actuarial Science, its NSC selection level rather than the 80% NSC minimum).
Higher Level: 7 = 95% · 6 = 90% · 5 = 85% · 4 = 75% · 3 = 65% · 2 = 55% · 1 = 45%

Subject minimums: Per programme, in grades. BCom (Actuarial Science): Maths 5 on HL or 6 on SL, English 4 on HL (or 4 HL / 5 SL as a second language). BSc (Biodiversity and Ecology) and BAgric/BScAgric: English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry each at 4 on HL or 5 on SL.
Exemption: USAf matriculation exemption via the IB Diploma: 24 points, or 2 Higher Level and 3 Standard Level subjects passed at 4-7, plus English Language. For all candidates other than Namibia, English First Language is stated as non-negotiable for exemption.
IB HL sits one band above IB SL for every grade except 1 (both 45%). An IB HL 4 converts to 75%, which is why programmes needing NSC 60-65% still ask for HL 4 / SL 5. Grades below SL 1 / HL 1 are not listed.
