Points-based
Express Entry (FSWP / CEC / FSTP)
Canada's central PR system. You create a profile, get a Comprehensive Ranking System score, and wait for an invitation to apply. Category-based draws now target specific occupations at much lower score cut-offs than general draws.
Path to settlementExpress Entry grants permanent residence directly. Citizenship needs 1,095 days' physical presence within the preceding 5 years.
Requirements and sources
- Federal Skilled Worker: 1 year of skilled work (NOC TEER 0-3) in the last 10 years, CLB 7 English, and secondary education at minimum.
- Canadian Experience Class: 1 year of Canadian skilled work experience in the last 3 years; no formal education requirement.
- Proof of settlement funds from 7 July 2025: CAD 15,263 for one person, CAD 19,001 for two, CAD 23,360 for three.
- Accepted language tests: CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training, PTE Core (English); TEF/TCF Canada (French). Results must be under 2 years old.
- Since 25 March 2025 an arranged-employment/LMIA job offer no longer adds CRS points (medium confidence: widely reported, IRCC bulletin URL not located).
- 2026 category-based selection covers 10 categories including healthcare, STEM, trades, education, transport, French, physicians and researchers.
- How the degree matters
- Education is scored directly in the CRS and foreign degrees need an Educational Credential Assessment. Your NOC occupation code determines which category-based draws you can be selected in.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
Provinces nominate candidates who fit local labour needs. An Express Entry-aligned nomination adds 600 CRS points, which makes an invitation very likely. Allocations were cut sharply in 2025 and partly restored for 2026-2028, and competition for nominations is strong.
Path to settlementLeads to permanent residence, either via Express Entry with the 600-point bonus or through a slower base (non-Express-Entry) stream.
Requirements and sources
- All provinces and territories except Quebec and Nunavut run nominee programs with their own streams and intake windows.
- An Express-Entry-aligned nomination adds 600 CRS points to your profile.
- National PNP admissions target: 91,500 for 2026 and 92,500 for each of 2027 and 2028 (2026-2028 Immigration Levels Plan), after a cut to 55,000 in 2025.
- Recent PNP-specific Express Entry draws have had very high CRS cut-offs, reflecting the 600-point bonus.
- Graduate-facing streams include Ontario's Human Capital Priorities and BC PNP's Skilled Worker and International Graduate streams.
- Each province and territory sets its own streams and requirements, and the number of people it can nominate each year; current streams are listed on each province's or territory's own program site.
- How the degree matters
- Most graduate-facing streams require a degree plus an occupation on the province's in-demand list, and often a job offer in that province.

After studying there
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
An open work permit after studying in Canada, worth up to 3 years. Canadian work experience gained on a PGWP can count towards the Canadian Experience Class.
Path to settlementIndirect: skilled Canadian work on a PGWP can count towards the Canadian Experience Class, which needs at least 1 year of skilled work in Canada in the 3 years before applying.
Requirements and sources
- Programs of 2 years or longer can get a PGWP of up to 3 years; shorter programs (minimum 8 months) get roughly the length of the program.
- Master's degree programs of at least 8 months can get a 3-year PGWP even though the program is shorter than 2 years.
- University bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates are EXEMPT from the field-of-study requirement.
- College/non-degree graduates must have a program whose CIP code is on IRCC's eligible fields list (for study permits applied for on or after 1 November 2024).
- Language: CLB/NCLC 7 in all four abilities for university graduates, CLB 5 for college graduates (for PGWP applications submitted on or after 1 November 2024).
- It is an open work permit — no employer sponsor or job offer needed.
- How the degree matters
- Degree-level study at a university removes the field-of-study restriction entirely, which is a major advantage over college diplomas.

Youth mobility
International Experience Canada (IEC) / Working Holiday
Canada's youth mobility scheme. It operates only with countries that hold a bilateral agreement, and South Africa does not. No African country currently has an IEC agreement with Canada.
Path to settlementNot applicable to South Africans.
Requirements and sources
- Open only to citizens of countries with a youth mobility agreement — Australia, NZ, UK, Ireland, most of the EU, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Chile and others.
- South Africa is absent from the official eligible-countries list.
- Recognized Organizations facilitate IEC placements but appear restricted to citizens of IEC countries, so they are not a workaround.
- Other routes open to South Africans include study followed by a PGWP, employer-sponsored work permits, Express Entry and the provincial nominee programs.
- How the degree matters
- Not applicable — the scheme is nationality- and age-based.

LMIA-based work permit and Global Talent Stream
Employer-driven temporary work permits. The Global Talent Stream under the Global Skills Strategy offers two-week processing for high-skilled hires at eligible innovative employers.
Path to settlementIndirect — the Canadian work experience gained supports a later Express Entry (CEC) application.
Requirements and sources
- A standard work permit needs the employer to obtain a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
- High-wage vs low-wage stream is set by comparing the offered wage against the provincial median plus 20%.
- Global Talent Stream Category A is by referral from a designated partner; Category B covers occupations on the Global Talent Occupations List.
- Service standards: 10 business days for the LMIA decision and about 2 weeks for the work permit.
- Employers must file a Labour Market Benefits Plan for the Global Talent Stream.
- An LMIA job offer no longer adds CRS points, but the Canadian experience it generates still feeds the Canadian Experience Class.
- How the degree matters
- The Global Talent Occupations List is heavily weighted to ICT and engineering roles, which typically expect a relevant degree.
