United Arab Emirates visa routes

What each route is, and whether it can lead to settling there.

6 routes

Skilled work

Employment residence visa and MOHRE work permit

The standard route. A UAE employer gets you a work permit and a residence visa, valid for 2 years and renewable. The visa is tied to that employer: if the job ends, the employer cancels it and you must find a new sponsor or leave within the grace period.

Path to settlementNone. Renewable for as long as an employer sponsors you, but years on a work visa do not lead to permanent residence or citizenship.

Requirements and sources
  • The employer must apply; you cannot apply for a standard work visa yourself.
  • Private-sector jobs need a work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE); the 'recruit from outside the UAE' permit is valid for 2 years.
  • Medical fitness test for everyone aged 18 and over, and an Emirates ID card issued by ICP.
  • Certain jobs need an attested degree: attested in South Africa, then by the UAE embassy, then by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • No minimum salary or degree for the basic visa. Salary alone decides family sponsorship (AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, regardless of job title); MOHRE skill level (1-9) and salary decide Green, Golden and jobseeker eligibility.
  • After cancellation there is a grace period to leave or change status; the length depends on the resident category, up to 6 months.
How the degree matters
A degree is not legally required for every work visa, but graduate jobs sit at MOHRE skill levels 1-3, and regulated professions (health, engineering, teaching, law) need the degree attested and recognised plus a UAE licence.

Skilled work

Green Visa (skilled employee or freelancer)

A 5-year, renewable, self-sponsored residence visa. You still need a job or freelance income, but the visa is not held by your employer, and you can sponsor your spouse and children.

Path to settlementNo path to permanent residence or citizenship, but it gives more independence from one employer than a standard work visa. It must be renewed every 5 years while you still qualify.

Requirements and sources
  • Skilled employee: a valid UAE employment contract, MOHRE skill level 1, 2 or 3, a bachelor's degree or equivalent, and a salary of at least AED 15,000 a month.
  • Freelancer or self-employed: a MOHRE freelance or self-employment permit and a bachelor's degree or specialised diploma.
  • Freelancers must also show annual income of at least AED 360,000 over the previous two years (GDRFA wording) and financial stability.
  • Entry visa fee AED 200 plus 5% VAT (Dubai); a separate investor or business-partner category also exists.
  • Valid 5 years, renewable; no UAE sponsor needed; the holder can sponsor a spouse and children.
How the degree matters
A bachelor's degree is a hard requirement in both the employee and freelancer categories. It must usually be attested and recognised in the UAE.

Other

Golden Visa (10-year residence)

The UAE's long-term exception: a 10-year, self-sponsored residence visa, renewable in most categories. It covers skilled professionals earning at least AED 30,000 a month, top recent graduates, investors, and people with exceptional talent such as doctors, scientists and PhD holders.

Path to settlementThe closest the UAE has to permanent residence: 10 years, renewable while the holder still qualifies. The top students and graduates permit is not renewed when it expires; the holder must qualify under another category to stay. It is still not citizenship and does not lead to it.

Requirements and sources
  • Skilled professionals: a valid UAE work permit, MOHRE occupational level 1 or 2, a bachelor's degree or equivalent, a salary of at least AED 30,000 a month, and comprehensive health insurance.
  • Graduates of universities in the top 100 of the Ministry-recognised world ranking: GPA of at least 3.5 and graduated within the last 2 years. Eligibility depends on the university's place in the Ministry-approved ranking.
  • Graduates of UAE universities: GPA of at least 3.5 (Category A) or 3.8 (Category B) universities, within 2 years of graduating.
  • Specialist doctors and other talent categories need a recommendation from the relevant authority, such as the Ministry of Health and Prevention.
  • Investor category: minimum capital or property of AED 2 million. ICP and GDRFA Dubai list 10-year permits for both public-investment and real estate investors; u.ae's summary table lists 5 years for real estate, so the official sources differ.
  • No sponsor is needed; the holder can sponsor spouse, children and parents. The 6-month absence rule does not apply to Golden Visa holders.
How the degree matters
The categories most often relevant to graduates are skilled professionals (degree plus AED 30,000 a month at a senior level) and high-GPA graduates of UAE universities.

Job seeker

Jobseeker visit visa

A single-entry visit visa of 60, 90 or 120 days to look for work in the UAE without a local sponsor. You cannot work on it: a job means switching to an employer-sponsored work visa.

Path to settlementNone directly; it only lets you job-hunt in person.

Requirements and sources
  • Either a role at MOHRE skill level 1, 2 or 3, or graduation within the last 2 years from one of the world's top 500 universities (ranking approved by the Ministry of Education).
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent is required in every case.
  • A financial guarantee set by the authorities; fees vary by length and emirate and are not listed on u.ae.
  • Apply online through ICP or GDRFA Dubai; no UAE host or sponsor is needed.
How the degree matters
Aimed at graduates: a bachelor's degree or equivalent is always required. Recent graduates of top-500 universities qualify without a skill-level 1-3 role.

Student residence visa (no post-study work visa)

A student residence visa sponsored by a UAE university or a resident parent; the application includes a certificate from the institution stating the length of the course. The UAE has no dedicated post-study work visa: graduates need a job offer, a jobseeker visa, or a Golden Visa for top graduates.

Path to settlementNone, except through the Golden Visa for outstanding graduates.

Requirements and sources
  • Sponsor: an accredited UAE university or college, or a UAE-resident parent (sons up to 25, or older if they show they are attending a higher education institution; daughters until marriage).
  • The application needs a certificate from the university or institute stating the duration of study. u.ae says sponsored residence visas are issued for 1, 2 or 3 years; it does not say the student visa runs for the whole course.
  • Part-time and student training permits are issued by MOHRE to the employer, not the student; the student training and employment permit lasts 3 months. University students can apply themselves only for the private teacher work permit.
  • Top graduates of UAE universities (GPA 3.5 or 3.8 depending on the university's category, within 2 years) can apply for a 10-year Golden Visa, which is not renewed when it expires.
  • Otherwise, after graduating you move to an employer-sponsored work visa or a jobseeker visit visa.
How the degree matters
A UAE degree with a high GPA opens the Golden Visa category for top graduates of UAE universities.

Other

Family residence visa (sponsored by a resident)

Expat residents can sponsor a spouse and children if they earn at least AED 4,000 a month (or AED 3,000 plus accommodation). Family members' residence depends entirely on the sponsor's own visa.

Path to settlementNone. The family's visas end if the sponsor's visa is cancelled.

Requirements and sources
  • Minimum salary AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus employer-provided accommodation.
  • Spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 and children with special needs; Green Visa holders can also sponsor first-degree relatives.
  • Family members aged 18 and over must pass a medical fitness test.
  • Sponsored family members can work only with their own MOHRE work permit (there is a specific permit for family-sponsored residents).
How the degree matters
Not applicable to the family member; the sponsor's income matters.
