Qualification recognition

What it takes to have your qualification recognised and work in another country.

Physiotherapy in 9 countries Tap a country to see how to qualify there

5 United Kingdom Recognised, paperwork only High demand

Paperwork rather than exams: HCPC assesses your file and may ask for a professional discussion.

Recognition
4/5 Mutual recognition or an assessment plus registration. No major exams.
Time to practise
Not published. Allow 9-15 months including documents and visa.
What it takes: exams, language test, cost, regulator
Exams
None automatically. A test of competence only if HCPC needs more information before deciding.
Language test
IELTS 7.0 overall with nothing below 6.5, or TOEFL or OET. South Africa is not on HCPC's qualifying-countries list, so SA applicants need an English test.
Rough cost
Scrutiny fee GBP 678.38 (non-refundable), plus the international registration fee of GBP 370.02 for three professional years (only two years, GBP 246.68, if you join in the first year of your profession's registration cycle)

Worth knowing: The English test certificate must be under 2 years old when HCPC receives the application; allow for it in the timeline and cost.

Confidence: medium. We could not fully confirm every detail here from official sources. Check before relying on it.

Step by step 5 steps

  1. Check eligibility for the HCPC international route and get your professional documents certified.
  2. Apply online through the HCPC portal and pay the scrutiny fee of GBP 678.38.
  3. HCPC assesses your SA degree against the Standards of Proficiency for Physiotherapists.
  4. If HCPC needs more information you are invited to sit a test of competence, usually delivered virtually on Microsoft Teams.
  5. Pay the registration fee, join the register, and get an employer to sponsor a Health and Care Worker visa.
Evidence and sources (4)

Demand evidence: Health and Care Worker visa codes include physiotherapists (2221), a priority route with reduced fees and no health surcharge. (source)

5 Ireland Recognised, paperwork only High demand

Physiotherapist is on Ireland's Critical Skills list; CORU assesses your degree rather than examining you.

Recognition
4/5 Mutual recognition or an assessment plus registration. No major exams.
Time to practise
Recognition can take up to four months once the file is complete, plus registration time
What it takes: exams, language test, cost, regulator
Exams
No standard entry exam. A compensation measure is possible where the qualification is not judged equivalent, but this was not confirmed for physiotherapists.
Language test
From 8 May 2026 CORU requires an English test unless an exemption applies (such as a university letter for a qualification gained through English in the last 2 years): OET (Physiotherapy) grade B (350) in three components and C+ (300) in one, IELTS Academic 7.0 with no element below 6.5, or Cambridge C1 grade C.
Rough cost
Recognition application fee EUR 510 (CORU's guidance notes; its FAQ still says EUR 410); the registration fee is additional

Worth knowing: Fee and compensation-measure details were only partly verifiable; confirm current requirements directly with CORU.

Confidence: medium. We could not fully confirm every detail here from official sources. Check before relying on it.

Step by step 5 steps

  1. Apply to CORU for Recognition of International Qualifications and pay the recognition fee.
  2. CORU compares your SA degree against the standards of proficiency of accredited Irish physiotherapy qualifications.
  3. Receive the decision; if material differences are found you complete a compensation measure (an aptitude test or a period of adaptation).
  4. Apply for registration on the Physiotherapists Register.
  5. Apply for a Critical Skills Employment Permit with an Irish job offer.

3 Netherlands Major requalification Some demand

No professional exam for physiotherapists and the application is free, but Dutch B2 is compulsory.

Recognition
2/5 Substantial re-study, long supervised practice, scarce posts or a hard language barrier.
Time to practise
6-18 months on average once the file is complete, plus time to reach the language level
What it takes: exams, language test, cost, regulator
Exams
None for physiotherapists. The BI-toets professional knowledge test applies only to doctors, dentists and nurses.
Language test
Dutch B2 (the BIG-register lists fysiotherapeut as an HBO-level profession); English reading ability is also required.
Rough cost
The application is currently free; you pay for translations, legalisation and the Dutch exam

Worth knowing: Dutch B2 is shown with the Staatsexamen NT2 (Dutch as a second language), so allow time to reach that level before applying.

Confidence: medium. We could not fully confirm every detail here from official sources. Check before relying on it.

Step by step 5 steps

  1. Gather and legalise your documents and obtain the Dutch language certificate before applying.
  2. Apply at mijn.bigregister.nl for a verklaring van vakbekwaamheid (declaration of professional competence).
  3. Your degree is assessed against the Dutch fysiotherapeut standard.
  4. The CBGV commission reviews the file and a decision is issued.
  5. Apply for BIG registration, which fysiotherapeuten must hold to work independently.
Evidence and sources (3)

Demand evidence: No Dutch shortage list; physiotherapists must register in the BIG-register (CIBG) and use normal work-permit routes. No current UWV occupation data reachable. (limited evidence for this country) (source)

4 Germany Major requalification High demand

German B2 plus a likely exam: your degree is compared with a vocational course of 2,900 plus 1,600 hours.

Recognition
2/5 Substantial re-study, long supervised practice, scarce posts or a hard language barrier.
Time to practise
3-4 months for the decision if documents and language are ready; an estimated 1-3 years from a standing start
What it takes: exams, language test, cost, regulator
Exams
Kenntnispruefung or Eignungspruefung on the content of the German state examination, or an adaptation course ending in a Fachgespraech.
Language test
German at CEFR B2, e.g. a Goethe-Institut certificate. Bavaria also requires, as a rule, a Fachsprachpruefung at B2 or above; exceptions include German as a first language, 10 years of German-medium schooling or a 3-year training completed in German.
Rough cost
Not published. The applicant bears the costs and they vary by state.

Worth knowing: German physiotherapy is a vocational qualification with a prescribed hour structure that an SA BSc will not map onto cleanly.

Confidence: medium. We could not fully confirm every detail here from official sources. Check before relying on it.

Step by step 5 steps

  1. Assemble documents including a tabular breakdown of subjects and teaching hours, evidence of practical hours and a German B2 certificate.
  2. Apply to the competent authority in one German state only, found via the ANABIN database, with a declaration that you have not applied elsewhere.
  3. The authority decides within 3 months of a complete submission, extendable by one month.
  4. If equivalence is established you receive the Berufserlaubnis; if not, you take an Anpassungslehrgang (up to 3 years) or a Kenntnispruefung.
  5. Resolve your visa or residence status under the skilled immigration law.

4 United States Exams or bridging High demand

A USD 1,340 credential review taking about six months, then the NPTE; the US entry standard is a doctorate.

Recognition
3/5 Licensing exams, an adaptation period or a conversion course. Typically 6 to 24 months.
Time to practise
1-2 years or more; the FCCPT evaluation alone takes about 23-25 weeks
What it takes: exams, language test, cost, regulator
Exams
NPTE (National Physical Therapy Examination). Some states also require a jurisprudence exam.
Language test
TOEFL is commonly required, but the score and which states mandate it were not verified.
Rough cost
FCCPT Type 1 for Licensure USD 1,340 (re-evaluation USD 870); NPTE and state licence fees are additional

Worth knowing: US entry level is the DPT. Whether a 4-year SA BSc is found substantially equivalent is unverified, so expect possible coursework deficits.

Confidence: medium. We could not fully confirm every detail here from official sources. Check before relying on it.

Step by step 5 steps

  1. Choose your target state and check that board's requirements, which vary considerably.
  2. Apply to FCCPT for a Type 1 credentials evaluation, which uses the Course Work Tool to compare your degree with the US first professional degree.
  3. Make up any coursework deficits the evaluation identifies.
  4. Get state board approval to sit the exam.
  5. Pass the NPTE, meet any state jurisprudence and English requirements, and obtain the licence.

4 Canada Exams or bridging High demand

The old two-part exam is gone: since January 2026 there is one virtual, single-day national exam.

Recognition
3/5 Licensing exams, an adaptation period or a conversion course. Typically 6 to 24 months.
Time to practise
Not published. Driven by credentialling turnaround, exam sittings and provincial registration.
What it takes: exams, language test, cost, regulator
Exams
Canadian Physiotherapy Examination (CPTE), offered eight times in 2026; CAPR lists six sittings for 2027. It replaced the PCE and its separate clinical component.
Language test
CAPR requires English or French proficiency. South Africa is not on its list of countries whose graduates need no language test (Australia, United States of America, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom, France), so an approved test such as CELPIP General, IELTS General Training or Academic, or PTE Core is needed. Provincial regulators may set different requirements.
Rough cost
Credentialling CAD 1,486; CPTE CAD 2,500 (CAD 1,800 for 2026 sittings for candidates who passed the former written exam in 2025)

Worth knowing: Transition timelines vary by province. CAPR's new Comparability Pathway applies only to physiotherapists who do not qualify for the Pre-Approved Pathway, so it is not the usual route for SA-trained physiotherapists. Check your province before applying.

Confidence: medium. We could not fully confirm every detail here from official sources. Check before relying on it.

Step by step 5 steps

  1. Apply to CAPR through the Pre-Approved Credentialling Pathway, which covers physiotherapists trained in and registered (or eligible to register) in South Africa, and pay the assessment fee of CAD 1,486.
  2. Submit your educational credentials, an approved English or French test report and proof of a pre-approved course on physiotherapy in the Canadian health care system (University of Toronto or University of Alberta); CAPR begins the assessment only once the test and course are done.
  3. Receive the credentialling outcome and complete any remediation required.
  4. Register for and pass the Canadian Physiotherapy Examination (CPTE), a single virtual day combining written and oral scenario sections with one pass mark.
  5. Apply to the provincial college where you will work for your licence.

5 Australia Open door High demand

South Africa is one of only five countries on the exam-free Express FLYR Pathway: about AUD 1,650.

Recognition
5/5 Unregulated there, or the South African qualification is accepted as it is.
Time to practise
3-6 months
What it takes: exams, language test, cost, regulator
Exams
None on the Express FLYR Pathway. Written, capability and clinical assessments apply only to applicants from other countries.
Language test
The Council requires no English proof for its assessments, but Ahpra's English standard applies at registration.
Rough cost
About AUD 1,650 for the Express FLYR Pathway, with assessment fees rising from 21 October 2026; a separate skills assessment for a visa costs AUD 1,674

Worth knowing: One of the cheapest and fastest of the nine destinations (New Zealand's International Express Pathway is comparable), but you still need a visa and Ahpra registration before working.

Step by step 5 steps

  1. Check you meet the South Africa country criteria for the Express FLYR Pathway (the others are Canada, the UK, Ireland and Hong Kong SAR).
  2. Submit your documents for qualification verification, the Eligibility Assessment (AUD 1,415), which takes about 3 weeks.
  3. Complete the 6-hour Cultural Safety Training (AUD 235) on working in Australia's health system.
  4. Receive the Final Certificate from the Council.
  5. Apply to Ahpra for general registration as a physiotherapist and meet Ahpra's English requirement.

5 New Zealand Open door High demand

South Africa is named on the International Express Pathway, and an SA physiotherapy qualification meets the English requirement.

Recognition
5/5 Unregulated there, or the South African qualification is accepted as it is.
Time to practise
Not published. The Board reports International Express applications take on average 1-2 weeks once documents are complete.
What it takes: exams, language test, cost, regulator
Exams
None identified for the Express Pathway. An International General Pathway exists for those who do not meet the Express criteria.
Language test
Met by an SA pre-registration physiotherapy qualification (Option B); otherwise IELTS Academic 7 in reading, listening and speaking and 6.5 in writing, or OET, PTE or TOEFL at Board scores.
Rough cost
NZD 1,067 for Express pathway registration plus NZD 414 for the Annual Practising Certificate (2026/2027 fees)

Worth knowing: Confirm fees, timelines and English scores with the Board directly before applying.

Confidence: medium. We could not fully confirm every detail here from official sources. Check before relying on it.

Step by step 5 steps

  1. Confirm you hold unrestricted South African physiotherapy registration, or an SA qualification recognised as a pre-registration qualification.
  2. Submit your degree or academic transcript, certificates of good standing from every regulator you are or were registered with, police certificates, proof of English (an SA pre-registration physiotherapy qualification counts) and certificates from 2 approved cultural competency courses.
  3. The Board assesses your application against the Physiotherapy Practice Thresholds in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
  4. Obtain registration on the New Zealand register.
  5. Apply for an Annual Practising Certificate; you may not legally practise until it is issued.

4 United Arab Emirates Exams or bridging High demand

2 years' experience as a physiotherapist first; HPCSA-registered applicants are normally exempt from the licensing exam.

Recognition
3/5 Licensing exams, an adaptation period or a conversion course. Typically 6 to 24 months.
Time to practise
6-12 months once experience is met (estimate)
What it takes: exams, language test, cost, regulator
Exams
Usually none: the April 2025 PQR exempts holders of a valid South African licence and good standing if they qualified recently (within 3 years in DHA's copy of the PQR, 2 years in the DoH Abu Dhabi copy) or have no gap in practice since their last job. Otherwise the authority's physiotherapy licensing exam (computer-based, via Prometric for DHA).
Language test
English; the PQR says all licensing exams are in English. No Arabic requirement was found for licensing.
Rough cost
DHA credentialing fee AED 200, plus separate DataFlow verification and Prometric exam fees not published on the pages checked; total unknown

Worth knowing: The exam exemption does not remove the 2-year experience rule; whether community service counts toward it was not confirmed. Each authority may add requirements, and a long gap in practice removes the exam exemption. Visas are employer-tied and do not lead to PR or citizenship; the Golden Visa is the long-term exception.

Confidence: medium. We could not fully confirm every detail here from official sources. Check before relying on it.

Step by step 5 steps

  1. Register with the HPCSA and gain experience: the April 2025 PQR asks a physiotherapist for a BSc in Physiotherapy and 2 years of experience after qualifying.
  2. Choose the emirate you will work in (DHA for Dubai, DoH for Abu Dhabi, MOHAP for the rest) and apply online (Sheryan in Dubai, TAMM in Abu Dhabi).
  3. Have your degree, internship, experience letters, HPCSA or council registration and good standing verified by DataFlow (primary source verification).
  4. Only if the exam exemption does not apply: pass the authority's computer-based physiotherapy exam in English (DHA uses Prometric); three attempts are allowed.
  5. Get a job offer: the registration only becomes a licence when a UAE health facility activates it, and that employer also sponsors your visa.
Evidence and sources (7)

Demand evidence: Abu Dhabi's 10-year Golden Visa for Elite Specialists in Health Fields is open to holders of an Abu Dhabi Department of Health practising licence and a bachelor's degree, with Department of Health endorsement; elsewhere in the UAE physiotherapists are licensed health professionals on an ordinary employer-sponsored visa.
